We use a What Works Clearinghouse methodology of mentoring that utilizes near-peer mentors to work with high school students.

The What Works Clearinghouse study on near-peer mentoring has shown the following:

  • Improvement in grades

  • Increase in student retention

  • Increase in FAFSA completions

  • Increase in college applications

  • Increase in student engagement

  • Increase engagement in college talk and individualized instruction per student

  • Increase in career exploration, college visits and summer programs

  • Help in connecting college and career

Third party studies of SSA’s effectiveness have shown positive changes for more than one School District:

  • The data from the 2017 school year demonstrated that our program impacted overall student academic performance in 9th graders throughout North Carolina. As a whole, SSA students increased in academic performance while the control group saw a dip in grades.

  • One 5A High School in South Texas saw an 8% lift in college enrollment from their 2017 senior class who had mentors compared to their 2016 class who did not.

We have the privilege to partner with some of the most innovative school districts across the country.

Virginia GEAR UP

State Council of Higher Education for Virginia has partnered with Student Success Agency to increase access to mentorship for their high school students. Before the partnership, less than 5% of students had one-on-one time with a mentor. After a year with Student Success Agency we increased students with one-on-one time with a mentors to 26%!

Kamehameha Schools

Kamehameha Schools showed Student Success Agency what Aloha Spirit was all about by collaborating with us to offer their students mentorship to improve college matriculation. After a successful pilot with Kahuku High School, the partnership is expanding to three more high schools on the island this Fall.

Los Angeles Unified School District

In May 2018, Student Success Agency visited high schools in downtown Los Angeles to bring mentors to students as they transition into college. A quarter of LAUSD students are dreamers so access to one-on-one help through the college financial process is pivotal. Over 800 students opted-in to receive access to mentors for their freshmen year of college.

Utah State University

Utah State University GEAR UP program gave students from nine high schools access to mentors for their Senior year and first year in college to improve college persistence rates. Students and mentors month over month produced over 26,000 interactions giving staff insights on students as their transition from high school to college.

Montana GEAR UP

Access to mentorship is hard for rural school districts that are hours away from a metropolitan area. Montana GEAR UP got creative by enrolling 240 of their 600 students into Student Success Agency. None of the students’ mentors are located in Montana but one-on-one engagement in June was nearly one hour per student.

Birmingham City Schools

Birmingham City Schools paired hundreds of underclassmen across three high schools with mentors to improve the college mindset and academic performance of their students.
